Hope Is Not A Strategy

Hope is not a Strategy!

So many losing punters think they just need a bit more luck to become a winner.

‘If only I could win those close photos.’

‘If only some of those 2nds were actually winners.’

‘If only I could back a 20/1 winner’

‘If only….’

But those relying on a change in luck to reverse their punting fortunes are at odds of $1.01 and firming to never being long-term winners.

What a great Lay Trade!  Because while you can have good or bad luck on any given day, the fact is that over a period of months and years there is no such thing as luck.  As a punter you get out exactly what you put in times ten.

Bart Cummings was a legend of the Australian turf who won more than 260 Group One races and he talked about luck in his book “Bart: My Life”.  While obviously he was referring to training racehorses, everything he said applies to punting as well:

“If you have come to this book to discover the magic key to training Melbourne Cup winners, I’m going to disappoint you. There is no magic,” Bart said, “there is relentless work, discipline, adherence to your methods and plans, taking an interest in the horse’s welfare and above all, just plain common sense.

The message we as punters can glean from Bart’s words stands out like his eyebrows – we make our own luck. To paraphrase Bart, it comes from:

  • Relentless form analysis.
  • Strong discipline.
  • Sticking with your punting plan.
  • Keeping your head whether winning or losing.

WHEN IS COMES TO PUNTING – HOPE IS NOT A STRATEGY.

AND LUCK IS NOT A FACTOR.

WINNERS ARE GRINNERS.
