Punting with Confidence

Punting with Confidence

Punting with confidence and being consistent at it is what every punter wants. So I’m going to throw some things into the mix to help and tell you some of the things I use to stay in front.  Keep going – the article got a bit long but I didn’t know what to cut out!

Your Bank

The most important part of every punters life is survival. Whether you are a part time punter or a serious punter/investor, you must know how much you are going to allocate and spread over a period of time. The basic requirement is if you are going to spend $100 per weekend on the races then over the year you will need $5200 that you can call on. A good punter would not need the vast majority of the funding over time and that would make them extremely happy.

But let’s be realistic, every punter that ever lived has suffered a bad year or two. While the entire bank might not be wiped out, putting it bluntly, even the best of us have losing periods. So you need your bank to be managed well. Most punters know their own ability and how often things swing. So on that basis you need to manage your bank.

I’ve always been a fan of the 1% Theory on any one day. Recalculating after each day of betting and always betting to the highest point of your bank.  If you have $1500 you bet $15 and if it slips back to $1100 it is $11 and that will give you 100 days before it runs out. It’s always your choice and managing it well will see you out with funds available for the year.

Punting with Confidence

Confidence is a punters best friend, your gut feeling and when it goes, you are stuffed. You are best to pack up and go. Either for the day or a short break because racing will never stop but your money will.

sharp turn back viewConsistency

Consistency in a horse and jockey is vital. Good jockeys and good horses will always win races. Low strike rates mean inconsistent results. Confidence and Consistency go together. My moto is

“Good trainer, good horse, good jockey, good form is a VERY GOOD BET”

Value is the only stopping and starting point and every punter should know what price he is happy to back a horse at.

Information

Information comes to us in many forms. We carry so much in our heads that very few punters keep a note book and do 10 minute’s work before a race.  And almost no one does any work after the race.

You will use the information how you wish. My experience is that if you listen to jockeys and some trainers you will go broke. Jockeys will praise a horse to the trainer and owners to stay on board even if the horse is first cousin to a camel, and, of course, trainers and owners love their own horses. Most race have 10 to 15 runners, 15 trainers and 150 owners. That’s a lot of conflicting information to decipher. Work it out for yourself!.

Your information is your own, based on your own judgements, you will be right more often than not.

Knowledge

There’s no substitute for this. You will reap the rewards when you put your mind to it. You go to work for an average of 40hrs a week, so why would you not put hard work in to learn how not to lose your money, because it is hard earned cash. Unfortunately, 97% of punters lose their money and just accept that this is the way it is.  Not very clever when there are alternatives.

Most punters would know, on average, how their punting has been going, and when losing most will not admit it.  But that just means they are lying to themselves.

So here is an example with a little simple knowledge test. If you are looking to back a horse at 6/1 and it’s win percentage is 10 percent, then on average it wins 1 in 10 starts. So in terms of probability you’re backing 5/1 about a 9/1 chance, so where is the value?

The knowledge about the horse’s price and form is important. Perhaps there is something about the horse, the jockey riding the horse, the track, the distance, the weight or maybe fresh performance etc. This may give you a very strong argument why would you back it. But acquiring that knowledge takes time and effort.  If you don’t have a strong knowledge base, then this is where RaceBiz comes in – we do apply all our knowledge to come up with value selections for you.

Males and Females

There are periods of the year I like to look at the sexes a little more closely. Mares and Filly’s come into their own in the cooler months and tend to hold their form when in form. The Males tend to race better than the females in the hotter months as it can affect the females a little more, get my drift.

Method of Betting

A good system is good and  following it is hard.  I suggest unless you are very disciplined and very strong willed identify only a couple of methods of betting and stick with them “NO MATTER WHAT”

Eliminate the rest. Most punters don’t realize that all the information they need to make a system is in front of them every day, they just don’t know how to use it. I have systems that take less than 5 minutes a day.

We strongly recommend dutch betting the selections provided in each race.  For one day’s selections, our Daily and Monthly packages cover two race meetings with, on average 14 or 15 races tipped.  Follow this and you will make a profit – June results will be analysed and posted at the end of this week and you will be able to see for yourself.

Good systems can keep you afloat. If you follow a system, then follow it. Don’t mess around with it.

Never Borrow or Lend

I never lend on course and I never borrow on course. Manage your own money before and after the event, it feels much better in the end. Think what you will that’s how you should play punting.

horses in stableStables

I always take an interest in stables. It’s like putting blinkers on if you don’t look at what the big stables do because they win most of the races. The best piece of advice I can give is to follow one or two of the punting stables that are normally on the money. Some trainers know their horses, know when it is right and get the chocolates. There are only a couple in each state, so that is where we do the homework for you. I promise you they will keep you alive in times of need.
